After three short weeks, the Architectural Technology students have made extraordinary progress in Revit. Revit is quickly becoming the industry standard for how buildings are designed and documented. It is the most advanced and widely used BIM system in the world. BIM, which stands for Building Information Modelling, is a major evolution from simple 2d CAD systems. Rather than drawing lines, the building is virtually constructed using parametric 3D elements. Each element contains dozens of parameters from material assemblies to physical dimensions…

Planes perform in Tel Aviv during a military parade marking Israel’s 64th anniversary in 2012. AFP/Getty The measure unanimously passed the Illinois House of Representatives on Monday. The Illinois Senate approved it by a vote of 49-0 in April. Sponsors say they seek to counter efforts by an international pro-Palestinian campaign, known as the BDS movement (boycott, divestment and sanctions) to isolate the Jewish state. With the expected signature of Gov. Bruce Rauner, Illinois would be the first state to legislate against BDS. In a tweet Monday…

By Evan Gough NASA has been grabbing headlines recently with their potentially game-changing emDrive propulsion system. The emDrive has generated a lot of discussion, and a lot of controversy too. But NASA has a lot more going on than futuristic space travel designs, and one recent test flight showed that the minds at NASA are still working on innovative designs for flight systems that operate in Earth’s atmosphere. The Greased Lightning 10, or GL10, is a remotely piloted, ten engine aircraft that can take off and land vertically, and then rotate…

For any student, the decision to pursue a Ph.D. represents a major academic challenge and a multiyear commitment. For students from under-represented groups, however, the challenges don’t always end at the classroom door. From combatting racial and gender preconceptions to justifying to family and friends the decision to pursue a Ph.D. rather than a professional degree, many face hurdles that can dissuade them from even applying to graduate school in the first place. In an effort to dispel the notion that graduate school and careers in academia…

A feature of the old Google spreadsheets was to be able to append &newcopy to the end of the URL. What this would do is when you share a view only link with a student, it would prompt the student to make a copy. This is a feature I used all the time with students and sharing templates with colleagues. Unfortunately this feature no longer works with the new Google Sheets. The /copy works with ALL types of documents. Sheets, Documents, Slides, Draw!! In the URL up in the address bar delete the /edit at the end of the link. For a spreadsheet…

Associated Press Columbia University Law School is allowing its students to reschedule their exams if they feel traumatized by the recent grand jury decisions in the Eric Garner and Michael Brown cases. “The grand juries’ determinations to return non-indictments in the Michael Brown and Eric Garner cases have shaken the faith of some in the integrity of the grand jury system and in the law more generally, ” Mr. Scott’s letter said. “For some law students, particularly, though not only, students of color, this chain of events is all the more profound…

Investigation: Toronto Star reporter Raveena Aulakh worked undercover at a Dhaka garment factory Most shocking of all was how a nine-year-old girl named Meem, forced into work to help raise money for her family, was put in charge of training Ms Aulakh. The first time I saw Meem, which was also my first day at work at a sweatshop, she was having a good day despite the wretched heat. She sat cross-legged on the concrete floor, a tiny, frail figure among piles of collars, cuffs and other parts of unstitched shirts,Ms Aulakh wrote in the Toronto Star…

Imagine that you are a doctor and your evaluation is based on patients you didn’t have. Or a car dealer, and you are assessed by how many cars your colleagues — not you — sell. It sounds preposterous, right? Well, that’s just what is happening to public school teachers. In this school reform era in which high-stakes standardized testing is the chief assessment metric, some teachers are being evaluated in some part on how well their students do on new exams. Other teachers are being assessed on how well students they don’t teach do on exams, as well…
