Emails & Social Security Numbers

Email is NOT a secure route to send confidential information, in particular, Social Security Numbers (SSN’s).

To help prevent this, Ball State identifies emails containing Social Security Numbers.

Warning about SSN's

If SSN’s are found, the sender is warned as the email is being composed.

Warning Example:

Policy Tip: Your message has been flagged as potentially
containing sensitive data. If you believe this is in error,
please contact the Technology Helpdesk @ 765-285-1517

Email Blocked due to SSN's

If there are 3 or more SSN’s in the email, it will be blocked and not delivered.
